India's first monorail starts in Mumbai India's commercial capital, Mumbai has a new addition to its Transportation system. The much talked about monorail has been commissioned by Mumbai - and it has been an instant hit.

 The 2460- crore monorail project has been a challenging task, and engineering marvel. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chauhan inaugurated and phase-1 of the monorail, which runs from Wadala to Chembur, on 1 February 2014 and from the next day, it started commercial operations.

  Environment friendly and economically cheap, noise and vibration free monorail - the first of its kind of India - will have various safety and security arrangements, CCTVs will be installed on stations and in ajax and first aid will be available for the needy. It is a green project that does not use any fossil fuel. On the operational front the minerals will use regenerative Braking System which will enable about 25% saving in the power consumption.




 The Monorail project is being implemented into two phases - Chembur to Wadala and Wadala to Saint gauge Maharaj Chowk. The first phase of the Monorail - from Wadala to Chembur, an 8.93-km Stretch.

 The Mono's operations control centre (OCC) code easily be mistaken for a Space Centre what will all the colourful gadgets sparkling on the huge wall ! This is the centre from where the monorail's speed, signals, breaks, communication, and safety will be controlled.

Once commissioned on both the phases, the 19.17 km Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle Mono Rail corridor will be the world's second longest Mono Rail corridor - the longest being Japan's Osaka Monorail corridor which is 23.8 km. While there are 19 stations on the Osaka Mono Rail corridor, the Mumbai monorail corridor will boast of 17 stations. Will the Osaka monorail was constructed at a cost of rupees 12,694 crores the Mumbai monorail will be constructed and put into operations at a cost of approximately rupees 3,000 crores.
