What is the "Project Eye" launched by ISRO?

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has launched Project Netra, an early warning system in space to protect Indian satellites from debris and other threats.

Importance of the project:

A 50-year space history of humans has created a dangerous strip of garbage revolving around the Earth's orbit.

1. ISRO currently has 15 functional Indian communication satellites in geostationary orbit (36,000 km); 13 remote sensing satellites in low earth orbit (2,000 km) and eight navigation satellites are installed in the medium orbit of the earth.
2. Around 17,000 man-made objects are monitored in space, of which 7% are functional.
3. After a period of time, these objects become inert and collide with each other while rotating in space. Each year there are about 250 explosions due to the collision of these objects, as a result of which small pieces of debris keep rotating at a very fast speed.
4. The debris of dormant satellites and rockets in space exists in Earth's orbit for many years and this debris can damage any active satellites.
5. The project, costing around 400 crore rupees, will increase India's Space Situational Awareness capability like other space powers countries.
6. It can also be used to predict threats to Indian satellites from debris, as well as giving the nation a warning against a missile or space attack.
7. It will be first set up in a lower Earth orbit, which will also include Remote Sensing Spacecraft.
